Introduction

Absorb's optional Mercury Module offers a Leaderboard tool. With it, Admins have the ability to configure Leaderboards to act as learner incentive to move up the ranks. Learners can work their way up the Leaderboard ranks by completing courses, curricula, or ILC's, and/or competencies. This provides some healthy competition for Learners to see how they rank compared to their colleagues and fellow Learners.

Overview

How It Works

Learners can belong to more than one Leaderboard, and are awarded points for:

  • Online Course completion
  • ILC completion
  • Curricula completion
  • Earning a competency
  • Making a comment on a course

Re-enrolling in a course, or having an Admin retroactively enroll a Learner will also award points to Learners. Points are date stamped and cannot be retroactively changed (increased or decreased) based on updating the default points awarded by admins, or updating a specific course, competency, etc.

Default Leaderboard Point Values

As seen in the screenshot below, each portal can define how points are awarded to Learners in Portal Settings under the Defaults tab

Admins can choose to override the default points awarded for Online Courses, ILC's, and Curricula by entering the number of Leaderboard Points earned under the Completion tab (as seen below on left). This same option is available on the Add and Edit Competency page (as seen below on right). points.jpg

What the Learner Sees

Once a Leaderboard is created, and has an Active status, Learners will be able to see how they compare to other users. As seen below, Users will be highlighted in the report where they have the option of viewing Learners only within their own department, or across the entire portal.

Adding Leaderboards

Leaderboards can be added to Absorb via the Leaderboards report by using the Leaderboards workspace and the following tabs.

General Tab

The General Tab is used by the Admin to enter the bulk of the information required in order to create a Leaderboard.

Element Description
Name This is what the Leaderboard will be named wherever it appears in the LMS (mandatory).
Description This is the details of the Leaderboard, written by the Admin using the built-in text editor, that will be shown to Learners immediately below the name. Only a preview of the description appears unless expanded by the learner, so it is advised to include important information at the top of this text area.
Start Date The start date chosen from the date picker determines the starting point for which points are included/calculated in the Leaderboard (mandatory). An admin can change/update the start date for a leaderboard at any time, after which points will be adjusted accordingly.
End Date The end date chosen from the date picker determines the end point for which points are no longer included/calculated in the Leaderboard (mandatory). An admin can change/update the end date for a leaderboard at any time, after which points will be adjusted accordingly.
Publish Date The publish date chosen will determine when Learners can view the Leaderboard in the LMS. Does not impact point calculation.

Expiry Date

The expiry date chosen will determine when Learners can no longer view the Leaderboard in the LMS. Does not impact point calculation.

Author

This is the name of the Admin that initially created the Leaderboard. It is automatically populated by Absorb but can be changed to any other Admin name that is contained in the LMS.

Is Active

When this toggle is set to 'Inactive', the Leaderboard will be unavailable to Learners regardless of Start, End, Publish, or Expiry Date. Unless set to, 'Active', only Admins will be able to see it within the Leaderboard report.

Availability Tab

The purpose of the Availability Tab is to determine which Learners will be included in the Leaderboard by using the LMS's Availability Rules. Similar to other places in the LMS, the Admin can employ as many rule conditions as are necessary in order to include only those users desired.

Element Description
Filter This is the information category that will be the basis of the Rule (e.g. First Name, Last Name, Department).
Condition This is the logical condition that the Rule will have to satisfy (e.g. Starts With, Contains, Equals).
Value This is the value of the Rule which is directly entered by the Admin using the field provided (e.g. 'Marketing', 'Smith', 'New York').
Delete This deletes the Rule
Refine Rule This provides additional Filters, Conditions and Values to further refine the parameters of the Rule. This allows the Admin to make the individual Rule as specific as necessary (e.g. all learners whose name equals "Smith" and who also have a first name that starts with the letter "D").
Results This provides the number of Learners that have matched the created Rule and thereafter will be the individuals that will have the Leaderboard available to them once it is published. Admins should refer to the information generated here to make sure they have created the desired group of Leaderboard recipients.
Add Rule This adds an additional and separate Rule that will combine with any previous Rules above it to further refine the Leaderboard audience (e.g. all Learners with last names that begin with "Smi" and have a Department of "Accounting").

Editing Leaderboards

Leaderboards can also be modified in Absorb using the same Leaderboards space.

Actions

When working with a previously saved Leaderboard, the Actions available for use by the Admin are:

Element Description
Edit This button will relaunch the Leaderboards workspace where any selected Leaderboard from the Report can be updated by the Admin and re-saved.
Deselect This button will clear any Leaderboard selection(s) made by the Admin in the Leaderboard Report.
Save* This button will save any changes made to an existing Leaderboard and return the Admin back to the Leaderboards Report page.
Cancel* This button will cancel any changes made to the existing Leaderboard, revert back to the last saved version (which the Admin will be prompted to confirm) and then return the Admin back to the Leaderboard Report page.
Quick Save* This button will save the existing Leaderboard without returning back to the Leaderboard Report page so that the Admin can continue working on the Leaderboard they are currently editing.

(* - Action options available after the Leaderboard has been reopened for editing.)

Once the existing Leaderboard is re-saved the Admin can decide to run a filtered report based on the group of Leaderboards residing in the LMS.
