Slides with Timed Objects and On Click Advancement

It is possible to have an Object appear at a certain time in the Duration of a Slide. These controls are accessed by selecting the Object from within the Course Editor and reviewing the Behaviour section.

From the Behavior panel the following options are relevant:

  • On Click: Determine what happens with this Object when a User clicks.
  • On Hover: Determine what happens with this Object when a User hovers over it with their mouse.
  • Start Time: The point in time (based on Slide Duration) where this object becomes visible.
  • Pause Slide: If when this Object appears, should Duration continue, or pause. The User is required to manually resume the slide to continue.
  • Finish Time: When this Object should not be visible.
  • Show until the end of Slide: If the Object should be visible for the entire length of the Slide, after it becomes visible.

A simple example to build an Object that appears at a specific time is as follows:

  1. Access the Course Editor.
  2. Add a Page or use an existing one.

  3. Make sure Add time to slide is enabled under Settings.

  4. Set a Duration for the Slide.

  5. Create an Object.

  6. Select the Object by clicking it in the Editor.

  7. From the Behavior panel on the right-hand side add a Start Time for the Object.

  8. Test the Playback of the Course to confirm the Object appears correctly at the intended Duration.

The Object will appear at the point in the Slide Duration that reflects the configured Start Time. As an example, if the Slide Duration is 10 seconds, and the Start Time of the Object is 4 seconds. The Object will appear 4 seconds after the Slide begins to play.

On Click or On Hover Timing

It is possible to build a series of Objects that require the User click through them, to advance the Slide. Depending on your Course, and use-case, the specifics may be distinct. The important lesson is that each Object uses the On Click or On Hover functionality to resume the Slide.

In the following example, the Duration of the slide is 30 seconds total. There are three Buttons.

Each of the Buttons has a unique Start Time configured:

Each Button is configured to Pause Slide.

Each Button is configured to use the On Click action of Resume Video Playback.

In the above example, the following order of operations occurs:

  1. User begins the Slide.
  2. Slide plays, until the first Button appears.
  3. The Slide pauses.
  4. The User clicks the Button.
  5. The Button disappears, and the Slide continues until the Start Time of the next Button.

This method can be replicated, or expanded, to include more elements or advanced designs. The core functionality of using Start Times and On Click actions remains the same.

Interaction Timing Requires Duration

When configuring objects to use Start Time, remember that the Slide requires duration. Attempting to add a Start Time before a duration has been created will show this error:

To add a Duration to your slide, make sure no Objects are selected and open the Settings panel from the right-hand side.

From Settings you may toggle Add time to slide on and determine how long the slide will play for.
