Course Activity Report: Edit Lesson Activity

Follow

Applies to: Starter, Pro, Plus, & Enterprise Plans

The purpose of this final portion of the Edit Activity workspace, is to display detailed information on the Learner's current training in the Course, and allow the Admin to make targeted changes to the Learner's Enrollment, at the Lesson level only.

Usage

From this point in the workspace, the Admin can view:

  • A collapsed view of the Course's individual Chapters, which provides an indicator showing the number of Lessons contained inside each one.
  • An expanded view of the Course's individual Chapters, which provides a summary of the individual Lessons contained inside, as well as a general overview of the Learner's progress towards completing each one.
  • An expanded view of the Lesson's individual Attempts made by the Learner, which provides a detailed synopsis of the Learner's progress towards completing the item.

Upon viewing any of this information, the Admin has the further option to:

  • Manually override the Learner's individual Lesson Status.
  • Manually override the Learner's individual Lesson Score.
  • Manually override the Maximum Attempts the Learner is allowed in the individual Lesson.
  • Manually reset the individual Lesson completely, which includes all information on the Learner's Lesson Attempts, as well as their most recently recorded Lesson Score and Lesson Status.

Collapsed View

While the collapsed view of the Lesson Activity area is not the starting point that the Admin will encounter when they first launch the Edit Activity workspace (instead it will be the default expanded view that Admins will always be provided with - and is the next item described in this section) it is helpful to explain how the Lesson Activity area operates, beginning with the simplest view first.

The collapsed view provides a high level overview of the Syllabus of the Course, providing the Admin with a listing of all of the Course's Chapters, along with a Lesson total for each one.

From this view the Admin can locate and open whichever part of the Syllabus they need to view and/or edit for a given Learner.

While the expanded view is much more detailed with respect to training information, for navigation purposes when the Admin needs to be able to easily access the Syllabus of the Course (especially ones with large numbers of Chapters and Lessons), this version of a Learner's Activity will work best.

Element Image Description
Chapter Number

This area will display the numerical indicator that identifies each of the Course's individual Chapters.

Total Lessons

This area, located inside the Expand / Collapse Chapter button, will display the overall number of Lessons contained in the Chapter.

Element Image Description
Expand / Collapse Chapter

This button will expand or collapse the contents of the Chapter to allow the Admin to access any of the unit's individual Lessons.

The default for the LMS will be to always provide each Course Chapter in its expanded view format, after which the Admin can expand and/or collapse any of the individual Chapters as required.

It should be noted that once a Learner's Activity is saved, the LMS will not store how the Syllabus was previously displayed by the Admin - instead it will reset all of the Course's Chapters to the full expanded view, each and every time.

Expanded View

As mentioned above, the default format for the Lesson Activity area is the expanded view.

This view provides the full contents of the Course Syllabus, complete with all of its individual Chapters and supporting Lessons, as well as the Learner's combined Lesson-based statistics on their efforts towards finishing their training in each one.

From this view the Admin can assess the Learner's overall advancement in the Course, after which they can: further review the individual Attempts the Learner has made in each Lesson; edit the Learner's Lesson Activity; and/or, reset the Lesson altogether.

Since the Admin will most often be interested in having a summarized resource that they can easily consult with respect to the Learner's entire advancement in the Course (and which further allows them to then assess which Lessons they might need to view / edit further) having this snapshot as the standard setting of the Learner's training progress in the Course will work best.

Element Image Description
Lesson Number

This area will display the numerical indicator that identifies each of the Chapter's individual Lessons.

Lesson Type

This area will display the format of the Learning Object used by the Lesson (i.e. Video, Assessment, etc.)

Lesson Name

This area will display the Title assigned by the Admin in order to distinguish the individual Lesson from others contained in the Course.

Number of Lesson Attempts This area will display the total sum of the Learner's Attempts made towards completing the Lesson.
Lesson Score

This area displays the Learner's grade for the Lesson in the Course.

For Lessons that have been authored to allow for multiple Learner Attempts to be made, the Score displayed here will a result of one of the following:

  • The Learner's most recent Attempt (if one has been undertaken).
  • The Score added by the Admin using the Edit Lesson Activity workspace (if one has been manually assigned).

All Lesson Scores initially display a value of N/A until one of the above events happen, after which a percentage number will be shown.

The only exception is occurs when Admin erases the Lesson Score altogether and then clicks the Continue Action button, in which case the LMS will display no data here whatsoever.

Lesson Status

This area will display the Learner's present completion Status in the Lesson.

For Lessons that have been authored to allow for multiple Learner Attempts to be made, the Status displayed here will be a result of one of the following:

  • The Learner's most recent Attempt (if one has been undertaken).
  • The Status added by the Admin using the Edit Lesson Activity workspace (if one has been manually assigned).
Element Image Description
Expand / Collapse Lesson This button will expand or collapse the contents of the Lesson to allow the Admin to access all of the Lesson's individual Attempts made by the Learner.
Edit Lesson Activity

This button will launch the workspace where the Activity for a Learner's individual Lesson can be viewed and adjusted by the Admin.

(Refer to the Edit Lesson Activity section below for detailed instructions on using this feature.)

Reset Lesson Activity

This button will erase all of the Learner's data relating to the individual Lesson contained in the Course (which the Admin will not be prompted to confirm) and restores the Lesson to it's original configuration, prior to being launched by the Learner (i.e. zero Attempts made, no recorded Score, Status Not Started).

Any Lesson Activity deleted here is permanently removed from the LMS and cannot be recovered.

Expanded Attempts View

The Lesson Activity's expanded attempts view is simply an extension of the expanded view already discussed directly above. Other than what is already included in the default format, the only addition is the inclusion of the Learner's individual tries at completing the Course Lesson.

From this view the Admin can see how successful the Learner has been in the Course's individual Lessons and use the resulting information to decide if the Learner requires assistance and/or direct intervention in their Lesson Score and/or Status.

This functionality is likely to only be occasionally used by the Admin and for that reason is left collapsed and hidden in the expanded view for each individual Lesson, unless the Admin explicitly needs to access it. Consequently, if detailed individual Lesson information is what is called for by the Admin, then this view for those Lessons requiring closer inspection will work best.

Element Image Description
Attempt Number

This area will display the numerical indicator that identifies each of the individual Attempts made by the Learner towards completing the Lesson.

Attempt Date

This column displays the calendar date that the Learner made their individual Attempt at completing the Lesson.

Attempt Duration

This area will display the Time Spent by the Learner on their individual Attempt at completing the Lesson.

Attempt Score

This area displays the grade achieved in the Learner's individual Attempt at completing the Lesson.

Attempt Status

This area will display the Learner's Status for the individual Lesson Attempt.

For Lessons that have been authored to allow for multiple Learner Attempts to be made, the Learner's most recent Attempt (i.e. the highest Attempted Number in the list - if any have been undertaken) will be the result used both for this area as well as the overall Lesson Status described above.

Edit Lesson Activity

The Edit Lesson Activity workspace is directly derived from the Edit Activity workspace itself, but simply operates on a smaller scale. While the main version allows the Admin to affect a Learner's entire Course Enrollment, this workspace does so as well, except at the Course Lesson level only.

A further key difference between the two workspaces is that while the Edit Activity workspace will be used by the Admin for both viewing and/or potentially overriding the Learner's Course Activity, this abbreviated Lesson Activity version of the workspace is almost exclusively intended to allow the Admin to make manual overrides on the data contained in the LMS.

When inside this workspace, some of the Learner's Lesson information will be capable of being overriden by the Admin and some will not. In the latter circumstance, the data fields that are governed by the authored Course (i.e. the Score required to pass the Lesson) and the calculation of Attempts are controlled by the Course configuration directly.

When it comes to manual overrides made by the Admin, the changes made at the overall Course level, will almost always overrule the data values residing at the Lesson level.

There are some exceptions that can potentially alter how overrides work, but as a general rule:

  • Course Score > Combined Lesson Scores.
  • Course Status > Combined Lesson Statuses.
  • Course Completed On date > Individual Lesson completion dates.

As mentioned elsewhere in this topic, it is important for the Admin to always be aware of the consequences of the changes that they are making to a Learner's Course Enrollment, based on how the LMS functions and compiles its information for this Report.
