Client Awareness: Google Gmail SMTP Changes (Important)

Summary

Google has notified its clients about upcoming security changes that affect how third-party applications connect to Gmail and other Google services.

As a courtesy, we want to remind clients using Gmail for Custom SMTP that these changes may impact their LMS email functionality.

While Absorb does not control or manage third-party email configurations (such as Gmail), we want to ensure you are aware of this update so you can take any necessary action.

Google Announcement

"Starting March 14, 2025, you and your users must use OAuth with third-party apps to access Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts. OAuth is a more secure access method. You will no longer use a password for access (with the exception of app passwords). Google is turning off access to less secure apps—non-Google apps that can access Google Accounts with a username and password (basic authentication). Using basic authentication makes accounts more vulnerable to hijacking attempts.

Use this article to help your organization, users, and app developers transition from less secure apps and services to OAuth."

Impact

This only impacts clients who use Google for their Custom SMTP.

Action Required

Clients using Gmail for their Custom SMTP must update their settings before March 14, 2025, to ensure continued email functionality. Failure to do so may result in email disruptions due to Google blocking messages sent via outdated authentication methods.

For more details on Custom SMTP configuration, please review our Custom SMTP Configuration article.

Update:  We have created a new article to help with the Google configuration changes.
