Push Notifications may be enabled for specific Message Templates so that when the message is delivered, it appears as a notification on the mobile device the User has the Absorb Learn Mobile App installed on. A User may click the Push Notification to directly open the message in the Mobile App. These Push Notifications will prompt the User such as in this example:
The following Message Templates support Push Notifications:
- Online Course Enrollment
- Course Nudge
- Course Due Date
Default Push Notifications
For all clients that have Enable Mobile App toggled on, Push Notifications will be enabled by default for the following message types:
- Online Course Enrollment
- Course Due Date
- Course Nudges
This can be turned off by changing the toggle Enable push notifications for this message in the corresponding Message Template.
Configuring Push Notifications
To enable Push Notifications for a supported Message Template follow these instructions:
- Access the Admin Experience.
- From the Setup Menu, select Message Templates.
- Select the Message Template you want to enable Push Notifications for, then click Edit Template from the right hand side Actions menu.
- Click the checkbox for Enable push notifications for this message.
- Make certain to Save.
Allow Notifications
Notifications can be enabled in the Admin Experience but receiving them is up to the User and the configuration of their Mobile Device. When the User signs in to the Mobile App for the first time, they will be prompted to enable Push Notifications.
If this prompt is declined, or the User wants to turn them on at a later point in time. They will need to navigate to the notifications settings of their mobile device and manually give the app permission to send Push Notifications.
The Learner Experience
Enabling Push Notifications for a Message Template in the Admin Experience does not, on its own, mean a Learner will receive them. Delivery also depends on the Learner granting permission on their device. This section describes what a Learner sees in the Absorb Learn Mobile App and how they control Push Notifications from their device.
Enabling Push Notifications
Turning on Push Notifications is a two-step process the first time a Learner uses the app. When the Learner first signs in, the Absorb Learn Mobile App displays an in-app prompt with two options: Enable and Skip for now. Tapping Enable then triggers the device's operating system permission dialog, where the Learner must also allow notifications before delivery begins.
This in-app prompt appears only once. A Learner who taps Skip for now, or who denies the operating system dialog, will not see the prompt again and must re-enable Push Notifications through their device settings.
Opening a Push Notification
When a Learner taps a Push Notification, the Absorb Learn Mobile App opens the associated message directly in the app so it can be read in full. If the app is already open when a notification arrives, the notification still appears as a banner on the screen.
Managing Push Notifications on Your Device
Because the in-app prompt appears only once, a Learner who wants to turn Push Notifications on or off later does so from their device's system settings, not from within the app. There is no in-app control for enabling, disabling, or muting individual notification categories.
The available controls depend on the device:
- On iOS, the Learner grants or revokes the app's overall notification permission in device settings.
- On Android, the Learner grants or revokes the overall permission and can additionally adjust the individual notification channels that the operating system exposes in device settings.
When Enable Mobile App is toggled on, Push Notifications are enabled by default for supported Message Templates at the portal level. This is only the first layer. Each Learner must still grant notification permission on their own device before any Push Notification is delivered.
