Overview
A Curriculum provides the opportunity for Admins to group different Online Courses and/or Instructor-Led Courses into one training. The Curriculum will display all of the Courses contained within it, in an ordered fashion and on one page. Once the User has completed all the required Courses, the Curriculum and all the Courses the User completed in the Curriculum will display on the User's Transcripts.
The User will get enrolled into the Curriculum, but will not get automatically enrolled into each training item. The reason for this is the option within a Curriculum to offer different requirement types, for Minimum Courses and Minimum Credits. These 2 requirements provide the ability to give the User options on which training items they would like to take to complete the Curriculum.
Progress and completions can be tracked for the Curriculum itself, and Certificates, Competencies, and Credits can be awarded upon completion of the Curriculum.
Creating a Curriculum
The following steps will walk through setting up a Curriculum. For specific questions on common settings in all Course Types, please see the Course Settings section of the knowledgebase.
Step 1
Sign in to your Admin portal, select Courses from the Courses section of the Admin Menu.
Step 2
Then select Add Curriculum in the right side Action Menu.
Step 3
This will launch the Add Curriculum workspace, where the Admin can begin adding the General information.
Step 4
After entering in the General information about the Curriculum, the next section Courses is where the Online Courses and Instructor-Led Courses are added to the Curriculum. Select the Add Courses button to begin adding your training to the Curriculum.
Groups can be added to organize different training in the Curriculum and also provide the opportunity to provide the Learner different requirements to complete the Curriculum. A Curriculum can have several Groups that hold multiple Online Courses and Instructor-Led Courses, just like an Online Course can have several chapters that hold multiple lessons.
Below are different requirements types that can be configured within a Curriculum.
-
Pace Progress:
- Toggled On, learners will be forced to complete all the Groups in the order presented to them in the Curriculum.
- Disabled or toggled Off, learners can complete the Groups in whatever order they wish (e.g. they can review Group 2 before they review Group 1.)
- Must complete all - all Online Courses and Instructor-Led Courses in the Group must be completed.
- Minimum courses - Learners only need to complete the minimum number of courses provided in the number box that displays when this option is selected. There will need to be at least this many Online Courses and Instructor-Led Courses in the Group in order for this option to work.
Note: If the minimum courses in the number box is set to equal the number of courses in the group, after saving, the radio button will default back from 'Minimum Courses' to 'Must Complete All'.
-
Minimum credits - the Learner must earn as many credits provided in the setup, in order to meet the requirement to complete the Group.
- Note: Online Courses and Instructor-Led Courses in this Group must have credits assigned to them in order for this option to work.
Note: If any of these requirements are altered, the Users who are enrolled and in an In Progress or Not Started status, will receive the updated requirements.
Step 5
Continue setting up the Curriculum using the different Course Settings.
Special Considerations
Here are a few things regarding Curricula you may want to consider.
- The enrollment of the Curriculum does not automatically enroll Users into the training within the Curriculum. This is meant to accommodate the requirement options. If you would like the User to be automatically enrolled into the training included, the Post-Enrollment option on the Curriculum will provide the option to automatically enroll or re-enroll Users into other Courses when enrolled into the Curriculum.
- Enrollment rules that are set for the curriculum will take precedence at the Course level and override the enrollment rules that are set for each individual course located within the curriculum. Sessions must have self-enrollment rules enabled to be available for self-enrollment in the Learner Experience.
- The Access Date, Expiration Date, and Due Dates of the individual Online Courses will be ignored. For example, if an Online Course has an access date of June 23rd, yet the Curriculum has an access date of April 15th then that Online Course will be available to Learners enrolled in the Curriculum on April 15th.
- Prerequisites on an Online Course or Instructor-Led Course within the Curriculum will also be ignored. Only prerequisites listed in the Curriculum’s Availability will be adhered to. For example, if the Course Absorb 102 required learners to complete Absorb 101 but this prerequisite was NOT added as a Curriculum prerequisite, the learners in the Curriculum would be able to take Absorb 102 even without taking Absorb 101.
- Online Course and Instructor-Led Course Message Templates will not be overridden by the Curriculum settings. This means that the learners will receive your Curriculum enrollment and completion messages and any enrollment and completion messages for the individual Courses.
- Post Enrollments are only available upon Enrollment or Completion of the Curriculum. Since a Curriculum cannot receive a Failed status, Online Courses and Instructor Led Courses have an additional status of Failed.
- If a Curriculum contains one or more Groups with no Courses, Users enrolled in this Curriculum will be automatically marked as In Progress on their User Enrollment Report. Likewise, a Curriculum containing a single Group with no Courses and no additional Groups will automatically show as Complete on this Report for any enrolled Users.
