The Learning Path
The Learning Path is similar to a playlist, in that it’s completely Learner-driven and very flexible. A Learner can add to it at any time, remove Courses they have changed their mind about, and keep the Learning Path active for as long as they wish. There are no minimums or maximums that are enforced in the Learning Path in terms of “required number of courses” or “minimum time spent”.
The Learning Path modal is broken down into sections (also referred to as containers), one per Job Skill. This keeps the courses in the Learning Path organized, allowing a Learner to focus their attention on their prioritized areas.
The modal header shows both the Learner’s Desired Role (from the Self-Assessment), as well as the current number of courses the Learning Path contains. For Skill-only paths, the modal will display Skill Set and the current number of courses.
Each section or container can be expanded or collapsed, making navigation easier on the user as the list of courses expands. Helpful anchor links like Job Skills allow a Learner to quickly jump between those two section in the Learning Path, and the Search Bar will enable a Learner to immediately jump to a specific container.
- The containers are based on the Job Skills that were present in the associated Self-Assessment.
- Containers are sorted A to Z.
- Each container shows a count of courses added for that specific Skill.
- There will be no courses added in a Learning Path until a Learner explicitly adds them, either via the Find Courses workflow or by adding from the Suggested Courses that are shown.
- A Course can only be added to one section on the Learning Path (even if that course is mapped to multiple skills). Once it’s been added to the Learning Path in one container, it will not be discoverable/available to add in other containers.
Suggested Courses
When a skill container is empty on the Learning Path, Suggestions are provided wherever possible. The Learner can choose to add one or more of these Suggestions, or leave them off of their Learning Path. This is intended to help reduce the amount of time required to get a Learning Path set up with relevant content. The following points summarize the function of Suggestions:
- Maximum of three Suggestions are shown.
- Suggestions are sorted using the same logic that the Trending sort utilizes from the Course Catalog (where most popular courses are shown first).
- Suggestions are only shown for empty containers. Once a Learner has added courses to that skill container, Suggestions will no longer be shown the next time they open the Learning Path modal.
- Learners can add individual suggestions (via Add + button), or add all of them (via Add All + button).
Finding Courses to Add
A Learner can find courses to their Learning Path by clicking the Find Courses button in a skill container. This will take them to the Add Courses modal. The Courses provided on screen come from a filtered list of the Course Catalog where each result has been mapped to that specific Job Skill.
In this modal, they are able to select as many courses as they wish to add to their Learning Path:
- This is populated based on Courses available in the LMS (un-converted content is not shown).
- The Learner must be able to see the Courses in the Course Catalog (via appropriate Self Enrollment Rules) in order for the content to be surfaced in this modal.
- Courses already added to a Learner’s Learning Path will not be shown here (since you can’t add the same course twice to a Learning Path).
- Courses here are sorted alphabetically.
- “Load More” will expose the next page of results.
- The count shown in the footer shows how many courses the Learner currently has selected in this modal, which a Learner can also easily filter for by using the View Selected Courses checkbox.
- A Learner is able to search through these Courses by keywords. There is a two character minimum for all searches.
When a Learner cannot find the Courses they are looking for, they can search for any Course in their LMS using the Search bar:
- The above rules that apply to the Learning Path also apply to Courses displayed through the Search bar.
- The Course does not need to be associated with a specific Job Skill in the LMS.
There may be cases where the Learner sees the empty state of the Add Courses modal, and this means one of two things:
-
There are currently no courses mapped to that particular Job Skill.
- An Admin could attempt to rectify this by looking in their Absorb Content Report, filtering by that Skill, and then converting additional Courses that are mapped.
- An Admin could also manually map their own Courses to that particular Job Skill as they see fit.
-
The Learner doesn’t have visibility to the courses that are mapped to that skill
- An Admin can rectify this by updating the Self-Enrollment Rules of the relevant Courses.
