Block Pages in Absorb Create

Block Pages use vertical scrolling layout made up of individual Blocks including text, images, video, Knowledge Checks, and Custom Canvas content to deliver a continuous, web-style learning experience. This article describes how to create and manage Block Pages in Absorb Create.

This content is intended for Absorb Create Course Authors and Admins. Before building a Block Page, confirm you have an active Absorb Create license, the required authoring permissions, and a modern browser for previewing and testing the Learner Experience across devices.

What Are Block Pages?

A Block Page is a page type in Absorb Create that displays content using vertical scrolling instead of individual slides. In the Add Page menu, this page type appears as Block Page.

Each Block Page is made up of individual blocks. Authors can add, remove, and reorder blocks to create a continuous learning experience for both web and mobile viewing. These pages can be especially useful for converting articles to course content, combining mixed media on a single page, or embedding assessment directly into the learning flow with Knowledge Check blocks.

Creating a Block Page

From the Admin Experience, follow these steps to create a Block Page:

  1. Click on the Create tile in the left-hand menu.

  2. Click Create Content to create a new Course or Manage Content to edit an existing Course.

  3. Open your new or existing Course.
  4. In the Add Page window, click Block Page.

  5. Enter a name for the page and click Continue.
  6. Choose the type of content block you want to add. The available options are: Text, Image & Text, Image, Video, Slide, or Knowledge Check

  7. If you selected Knowledge Check, choose the type of question you want to add: Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer, or True or False.

  8. Enter your content in the content block. For example, enter text in a Text content block, or enter the question and answer options in a Knowledge Check block.

  9. Click on the top or bottom edge of a content block to add another block above or below it. You can select a different type of content block using the drop down menu.

For Image and Video slides, the Media Library will open, where you can select existing images or videos, or upload new files. The Slide option opens the Add Page window, where you can select a template or page type to be added onto the Block Page. The page contents will exist as a single block on the Block Page. The Knowledge Check option lets you add an inline assessment block directly into the scrolling page using the existing Knowledge Check engine for scoring and validation.

In the example above, both a Text block and a Slide block have been added to a single Block Page. This can be useful for containing all course content on a single scrolling page, rather than Learners clicking through multiple pages in a Course

When there are multiple content blocks on a page, they can be re-ordered to meet your preferences. Use the up and down arrows above a selected content block to change its order on the Block Page. Note that this option is not available when there is only one content block on the page. For Knowledge Check blocks, feedback appears inline within the page rather than in a separate modal.

Edit Content Blocks

Content blocks can also be edited within a page. Open a course with a Block Page in Create and follow these steps to edit:

  1. Click on the block you wish to edit.
  2. Click the Edit button.
  3. Edit the content block. The available options will differ depending on the type of content block. For Text blocks, you can change the text within the block. For Knowledge Check blocks, you can update the question type, question text, and answer options. For Slide blocks, the Edit Slide page will open, where you can edit the Slide. For separate windows like the Edit Slide page, click Back to Block Page in the top left corner to return to the original page.

  4. Preview and publish your changes once complete.

Working with Block Types

There are different types of Blocks you can use on Block Pages. Below you can find an overview of these options, including Knowledge Check blocks for inline assessment:

Text Blocks

Text Blocks contain written text. They should use short paragraphs and clear headings to guide Learners through the material. Each Text Block should focus on a single idea to help prevent cognitive overload. When appropriate, authors may include lists to highlight key information, while keeping the overall block concise and easy to read.

Image & Text Blocks

Image & Text blocks combine both images and text in a single content block. This block type first prompts you to select or upload an image, and then enter the text next to the image on the Block Page. You can configure the image to display on the left or right of the content block.

Image Blocks

Image Blocks can contain related images or visuals. You adjust the size of the image using the Size options in the Image menu on the right side of the page. All images should include descriptive alt text. Course Authors should also test images on smaller screens to confirm that important details remain visible and readable.

Video Blocks

Video Blocks can include video files from the Media Library or uploaded to Create. Videos should include captions for full accessibility. Create Authors should also test videos on multiple platforms where possible to ensure smooth and consistent playback. You can configure video settings by clicking Edit on the Video Block:

Slide Blocks

Slide Blocks allow authors to embed reusable or newly created slides within Block Pages. Slides can support structured layouts, demonstrations, narration, and other multimedia experiences. Authors can create blank slides, apply templates to ensure visual consistency, add timed behavior when needed, embed video or screen recordings for walkthroughs, or develop audio-based slides for podcast-style content.

Knowledge Check Blocks

Knowledge Check Blocks allow authors to embed interactive assessment directly within Block Pages. This block type supports Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer, and True or False questions, allowing authors to reinforce understanding within the same scrolling learning experience.

Knowledge Check Blocks appear inline on the page rather than in a separate modal. They use the existing Knowledge Check engine for scoring and validation, and feedback is presented within the scrolling page. This makes them useful for checking understanding immediately after key material has been presented.

In AI-generated Block Page courses, Knowledge Checks are added by default throughout the Course. These questions are generated based on material covered earlier in each page to help reinforce learner understanding.

Before publishing the course, you can use Request Changes in the AI preview to modify, add, or remove a Knowledge Check. You can also request a different question type, including True or False, Multiple Choice, or Multiple Answer.

Once your Course is generated, you can follow the same workflow for AI Courses described in the Create AI article

The below section covers Image Updates for AI Block Pages. More details will be available soon!

Images from Uploaded PDFs

When a PDF is uploaded as the source for an AI Block Course, the AI will attempt to extract and place images from the PDF into appropriate image blocks throughout the Course. The extraction process is selective. Images are filtered by size (those under 1×1 inch are excluded) and evaluated for relevance. The AI looks for instructional visuals such as process diagrams and flowcharts when considering what should be included in the Course. Decorative or generic images are unlikely to be included, and extraction may be skipped entirely if suitable alternatives exists in the Unsplash library.

Each image is used only once in the Course. Images that are placed will be saved to your Media Library once you click Create Course.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Only images physically embedded in the PDF are supported.
  • This capability is only available for AI Block Courses. PDF extraction for slide-based AI Courses are not supported.
  • Only PDFs can be used as the source for this image extraction feature.
Not All Images Included

The generated Course will not include all images from the PDF, with only highly relevant images being included. This is expected behavior and not an error. If an image from the PDF is not included in the Course and should be, you can use the Replace feature to add it to the Course

Note that images cannot be uploaded to the Media Library during the Replace process. Images must be uploaded separately prior to replacing an image in the AI Block Course

The Learner Experience

Learners experience Block Pages as a continuous page rather than a sequence of slides. This creates a streamlined viewing experience similar to reading a modern webpage. Mixed media appears in one uninterrupted flow, scrolling replaces slide navigation, inline Knowledge Checks allow learners to interact with assessment content without leaving the page, and the layout is mobile-friendly to support on-the-go learning.

Best Practices and Troubleshooting

Below you can find some best practices and troubleshooting tips to ensure a smooth and continuous experience when using Block Pages

Courses Feel Too Long or Unstructured

Authors can improve clarity by adding headings within blocks, and dividing long content into multiple Block Pages to create natural break points.

Scroll Behavior Differs Between Devices

It is recommended to preview Block Pages on a variety of devices and browsers where possible to ensure consistent behavior. Using optimized image and video sizes can improve load time and responsiveness. Course Authors should avoid adding an excessive number of blocks to a single page, as this can impact performance and Learner Experience.

Using Knowledge Checks Effectively

Knowledge Checks are most effective when they are placed after the content they are intended to reinforce. Authors should align each question to material covered earlier in the page and use the question type that best fits the learning objective.

To maintain a smooth Learner experience, avoid overloading a single Block Page with too many assessments. When appropriate, vary between Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer, and True or False questions to support different kinds of Knowledge Checks throughout the Course.

Accessibility Considerations

To support accessibility across devices and assistive technologies, Course Authors should add descriptive alt text to all meaningful images, use clear headings and labels, maintain appropriate contrast and font sizes, and provide captions or transcripts for all media content.

Required Permissions

To create or edit Block Pages, a User must have the appropriate authoring permissions in Absorb Create.

Admins and Authors can create, configure, and publish Block Pages, including Knowledge Check blocks, while Learners can view published content. If you cannot access Block Pages, your Absorb Administrator can provide assistance.
