This FAQ answers common questions about how Button and Footer styling works in your Absorb Portal, what you can customize, and the limits to keep in mind. It covers styling managed through the Theme control panel and does not cover custom code.
How Are Buttons and Footers Styled in My Portal?
Buttons and Footers throughout the Portal draw their appearance from your Theme rather than from individual, per-location settings. You control how they look through the color variables in the Theme control panel, and those choices apply consistently wherever the same element appears.
Where Does the Footer Color Come From?
The Footer color is defined by the Base color variable in the Branding section of the Theme control panel. Because Base also affects the Header and other core interface areas, changing it updates the Footer alongside those elements rather than on its own.
For the full list of areas the Base variable controls, see the Color Variable Guide - Branding.
What Color Options Are Available for Buttons?
Button colors are drawn from the Status color variables in the Theme control panel. Each variable maps to a specific Button purpose or state, so a consistent set of colors is reused across the interface. The variables most relevant to Buttons are:
Variable |
Description |
| Primary | Used for primary interactive Buttons such as Enroll, Purchase, and Next Activity. |
| Default | Used for neutral Buttons and tool buttons that a Learner has not yet interacted with. |
| Danger | Used for Buttons that cancel, close, or delete content or progress. |
| Banner and Button Text | Sets the text color that appears on top of the status colors, such as the text on a Button. |
The Status section also includes Success, Failure, and Warning variables that apply to related states.
For the complete list and where each color appears, see Department Templates: Theme Tab.
How Are Button Rollover Colors Set?
You do not set hover colors separately. When you choose a color, the color picker automatically generates a darker shade of that variable, and this darker shade is used for Button rollovers and other interface elements.
For details on using the color picker, see the LMS Customization Overview.
Can I Style a Single Button or Footer Independently?
No. Buttons and Footers cannot be styled independently of your Theme. A change to a color variable applies everywhere that variable is used, so a single Button in a Footer cannot be given a unique color that differs from other Buttons of the same type.
Can I Change Button Shape or Size?
No. Theme styling controls color only. Button shape, size, and spacing are set by the product and are not adjustable through the Theme control panel.
What Should I Consider for Accessibility?
When choosing colors for your Buttons and Footer, aim for combinations that remain easy to read for all Learners. The advisory below outlines the recommended contrast targets.
We advise choosing color combinations that meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) AA contrast requirements: at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. This improves usability for all Learners.
