When you enroll a Learner into a Curriculum, they are not automatically enrolled in each Course the Curriculum contains. Instead, a Learner is enrolled in an individual Course the first time they launch it from the Learner Experience. This article explains why Absorb LMS handles Curriculum Enrollment this way, how a Learner's progress is recorded as they move through the Curriculum, and how to enroll Learners in every contained Course automatically if you prefer.
Why Courses Are Not Enrolled Until They Are Launched
Enrolling a Learner in a Curriculum creates the Curriculum Enrollment, but the Enrollment for each contained Course is created only when the Learner launches that Course for the first time. This keeps Enrollment records accurate and controls when per-Course messaging is sent.
This approach supports two things:
- The Learner's Transcript and activity reports show an accurate Enrollment date, completion date, and time spent for each Course, because those values begin when the Learner actually starts the Course.
- The per-Course enrollment email is sent to the Learner the first time they launch each Course, rather than all at once when the Curriculum is assigned.
How Enrollment Progresses Through the Curriculum
You do not need to manually enroll a Learner in the individual Courses within a Curriculum. As the Learner launches and works through each Course, Absorb creates the individual Course Enrollments and updates the Learner's Transcript automatically.
Curriculum progress rolls up from the Courses and Curriculum Groups the Curriculum contains, so the Learner's overall progress reflects their completion across the program. For a detailed explanation of how this is calculated, see How Curriculum Progress is Calculated.
Enroll Learners in Every Course Automatically
If you would rather have Learners enrolled in the contained Courses as soon as they are enrolled in the Curriculum, add a Post Enrollment rule to the Curriculum using the When Enrolled trigger. Post Enrollments automatically enroll a Learner into follow-up Courses based on an Enrollment, completion, or failure event.
To enroll Learners in every Course automatically, complete the following steps:
- In the Admin Experience, navigate to the Courses report and locate the Curriculum you want to update.
- Click Edit from the Actions menu for that Curriculum.
- Navigate to the Completion section of the Curriculum.
- Click Add Post Enrollment.
- Select When Enrolled from the When menu.
- In the Courses field, add each Course the Curriculum contains.
- Click Publish to save your changes.
For full details on the available options, including Delay and Allow Consecutive Enrollments, see Post Enrollments.
A Post Enrollment rule applies to Learners enrolled in the Curriculum after the rule is added. Learners who were already enrolled are not retroactively enrolled in the contained Courses.
Related Curriculum Settings
A few Curriculum settings change how contained Course completions interact with a Curriculum Enrollment. Review these if your program depends on how prior completions are counted:
- Retroactive Completion: When enabled, a Learner's existing Course completions can count toward the Curriculum, and the Curriculum completion date follows the most recent Course completion date.
- Require Course Re-Enrollment: When enabled, a Learner's matching prior Course completions are set aside so they must complete those Courses again as part of the Curriculum.
For where to configure these options, see Overview of Curriculum Settings.
