Personalized Learning Ribbon

This article explains how to set up and use the Personalized Learning Ribbon, a Learner Dashboard feature that recommends Courses to each Learner based on a Job Role and Skills they select. It covers the prerequisites, how an Admin adds the Ribbon to a Template, what Learners experience, and how recommendations are generated.

Before You Begin

The Personalized Learning Ribbon relies on the Skills feature and the Absorb Amplify Max content library. Before the Ribbon type can be added to a Dashboard, confirm that the following are in place for your Portal:

  • The Skills feature is enabled for your Portal.
  • The Skills toggle is turned on in Client Settings.
  • Your Learners have access to the Absorb Amplify Max content library.

Before You Begin

If any of these requirements are not met, the Personalized Learning option will not appear as a Ribbon type in the Template editor. For help enabling the feature, see Skills: Introduction and Skills: Configuring Skills & Licensing.

Add the Personalized Learning Ribbon

An Admin adds the Personalized Learning Ribbon the same way as any other Ribbon. The Ribbon is configured on the Private Dashboard of a Template so that it appears after a Learner signs in. For general guidance on adding Ribbons, see Custom Ribbons on Learner Dashboards.

  1. Sign in to the Admin Experience.
  2. Open the Setup menu and select Templates.
  3. Select the Template you want to edit, then use the Edit Template action.
  4. Under the Private Dashboard section, open the Content settings.
  5. Select Add New Container.
  6. Select Ribbon from the Container Type drop-down.
  7. Select Personalized Learning as the Ribbon type.
  8. Turn on Customize Maximum Container Width if you want to control the width of the Ribbon.
  9. Click Save to apply your changes to the Template.

Once the Template is saved, Learners who sign in will see a setup banner prompting them to create their Personalized Ribbon.

Department Templates

When you configure this Ribbon for a specific Department Template, turn off the Inherited Settings of Parent Department toggle before you add the Ribbon. This toggle only appears when a Parent Template exists. For more information, see Department Templates: Public and Private Dashboards.

What Learners Experience

After an Admin adds the Ribbon, each Learner sets up their own recommendations. The Ribbon guides the Learner through selecting a Job Role and the Skills they want to focus on:

  1. The Learner sees an info banner on their Dashboard inviting them to get started. They can skip this step and set up the Ribbon later.
  2. The Learner searches for and selects a single Job Role, either their current role or one they are working toward.
  3. The Learner selects the Job Skills and Competencies tied to that role. Skills are listed alphabetically, and selecting no more than five produces the most relevant results.
  4. The Learner confirms their selections, and the banner is replaced by Recommended Courses.

The Ribbon title reflects the chosen role and is displayed to the Learner as Suggested Courses for [Job Role]. Learners can change their Job Role or Skills at any time by clicking the Manage button on the Ribbon.

How Course Recommendations Work

The Ribbon populates with courses matched to the Learner's selected role and Skills, drawn from the Absorb Amplify Max content library. Recommendations update automatically as Learners progress and as the Catalog changes:

  • The Ribbon displays up to 20 Recommended Courses and does not include a View All button.
  • Courses are ordered by how popular they are trending across your Portal.
  • Recommendations draw from across all of the Learner's selected skills, so a focused selection produces more balanced results.
  • When a Learner completes a Course, it is replaced by the next most relevant recommendation.
  • The Ribbon refreshes when a higher-ranked Course becomes available, including Courses newly added to the Catalog.

Behaviors and Limitations

Keep the following behaviors in mind when planning how to use the Personalized Learning Ribbon:

Behaviour

Description

One Ribbon Per Dashboard Only one Personalized Learning Ribbon can be added to a Template.
No Learning Path The Ribbon is a lightweight discovery tool. It does not include self-assessment, progress tracking, or a structured learning path.
Course Pool Recommendations are limited to Absorb Amplify Max content matched to the selected role's skills.
Skill Selection Because the Ribbon caps at 20 Courses, selecting a very large number of Skills may mean some Skills are not represented. Selecting up to five Skills is recommended.
Skills Disabled Later If Skills is turned off in Client Settings after the Ribbon was added, the Ribbon no longer appears to Learners but remains visible in the Template editor so an Admin can remove it.
