This article is the central reference for Dashboard Tiles in the Learner Experience. It explains what Tiles are, where they appear on Public and Private Dashboards, how to add them, the Tile types available to your Portal, and how to customize their appearance. It consolidates information that was previously spread across several separate articles so that everything about Tiles lives in one place.
What Dashboard Tiles Are
Dashboard Tiles are the building blocks of the Learner Dashboard, the home page of the Learner Experience. Each Tile is a card that surfaces one thing, such as a link, a Category of Courses, a leader-board, a news feed, or a custom banner. Tiles are grouped into Containers, and Containers are arranged into rows to form a Dashboard. System Admins configure Tiles from the Department Template a Learner is associated with.
Every Tile has three consistent attributes: a type that determines what it displays, a position that sets where it sits in the layout, and a set of theming options that control how it looks. Some Tiles carry additional settings specific to their type, which are covered in the sections below.
Public and Private Dashboards
Tiles can be placed on two types of Dashboard, and the type determines which Tiles are available.
Element |
Description |
| Public Dashboard | Shown to individuals who have your Portal URL but have not yet logged in. The Public Dashboard replaces the Login page. Because the Learner is not authenticated, only a limited set of Tiles is available. |
| Private Dashboard | Shown to Learners after they log in. The full set of Tiles is available, including those that rely on Learner-specific data. |
For details on enabling and configuring each Dashboard type, see the Department Templates: Public and Private Dashboards article.
Adding Tiles to a Dashboard
Tiles are added within a Container on a Department Template. You must be a System Admin to access the Manage Templates menu. To add a Tile, follow these steps:
- In the Admin Experience (AE), click the Setup icon in the left-hand menu.
- Select Templates to open the Department Templates report.
- Select the Department Template you want to edit, then click Edit in the Actions menu.
- Select either Public Dashboard or Private Dashboard.
- Expand the Content drop-down section.
- Scroll to the bottom of the section and click Add New Container.
- Select the Tile container type.
- Click Add Tile(s) to open the Add Tile(s) modal.
- Select the Tile you want to add, then click Save.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Content section and click Save.
To edit a Tile after adding it, hover over the Tile and click the Edit action. If Tiles with configurable Titles and Descriptions are left blank, they display default verbiage in the Learner Experience.
Standard Tiles
Standard Tiles are available to all System Admins in every Portal. The following table lists each standard Tile, the Dashboard types it supports, and what it does.
| Tile | Dashboard | Description |

Feature-Specific Tiles
Several Tiles offer richer configuration or depend on specific features being enabled in your Portal. Because they rely on feature flags or add-on modules, the Tiles a given Portal sees will vary. Each of these Tiles is summarized below, with links to dedicated articles where more detail exists.
Welcome Tile
The Welcome Tile is a banner that is typically the first thing a Learner sees when they log in, which makes it a valuable engagement tool. It can be customized with announcements, scaled images, and personalized messages in any language available in your Portal, and different Welcome Tiles can be delivered to different Departments. Configurable options include tile height, a rich-text message with adjustable opacity, color, and alignment, and separate foreground and background images with their own display, opacity, and alignment settings.
- For step-by-step configuration, see the Welcome Tile article.
- For image dimensions and background image guidance, see the LMS Customization Guidelines - Welcome Tile Images article.
What's Next Tile
The What's Next Tile directs Learners to their next training and supports continued engagement with assigned and recommended learning. It is available on Private Dashboards only, because the data it displays is specific to each signed-in Learner. The Tile can display up to 12 Courses, including mandatory, expiring, and due-soon enrollments, and can be configured to include featured and recommended Courses.
The What's Next Tile was the first double-height Tile. When the Tall Container toggle is enabled, the row of Tiles appears at twice its natural height. This Tile is intended to be used with at least one other tall Tile, such as Collaborations Activity or Latest News.
- For the full course display order and configuration steps, see the What's Next Tile article.
Custom Tile
The Custom Tile gives Admins more freedom to build engaging, branded Dashboard content using HTML and CSS. It supports multiple calls to action within a single Tile, custom imagery, and embedded video. The Custom Tile is available when custom-code Tiles are enabled for your Portal.
- For code examples, the full list of supported tags and attributes, and responsive design tips, see the Custom Tiles article.
For every <a href> tag in a Custom Tile, you must specify a target attribute. Because of code security policies, links without a target will not open.
Learning Path Tile
The Learning Path Tile lets Learners jump directly into their Skills workflow from the Dashboard and return to where they left off. It is available when the relevant Skills functionality is enabled for your Portal.
Subscriptions Tile
The Subscriptions Tile gives Learners access to Subscriptions from the Dashboard. It is available on both Public and Private Dashboards when the feature is enabled.
Mentorship and Mentorship Sessions Tiles
The Mentorship Tile provides access to the Mentorship application, and the Mentorship Sessions Tile displays a Learner's upcoming Sessions to help them stay aware of scheduled engagements. These Tiles are available when Mentorship is enabled for your Portal.
Customizing Tile Appearance
Every Tile has three global color variables assigned on the Theme tab. To override those global colors, change the default icon, or add a background image for a single Tile, enable Customize Tile Theme on that Tile. With Customize Tile Theme turned on, you can adjust the icon color, icon image, text color, background color, and background image, along with the background image's display mode, alignment, and opacity.
For information specific to the Modern Learner UI, refer to the following article:
Tile Icons
A Tile Icon is the small image that identifies a Tile on the Dashboard. The Customize Tile Icon feature supports SVG and PNG files only, at a maximum file size of 50 KB and dimensions of 60 x 60 px. The following table compares the two supported formats.
| Consideration | SVG | PNG |
| Image type | Scalable vector | Raster image |
| Color support | Single color only | Multiple colors |
| Icon color control | Set using Tile Icon Color | Cannot be set in the LMS |
| Best for | Simple, single-color shapes | Complex or multi-color icons |
Tile Backgrounds and Image Sizing
You can change the background of a specific Tile through Customize Tile Theme, at a maximum file size of 300 KB and dimensions of 320 x 160 px or 1280 x 320 px. The size you should use depends on how many Tiles sit in a Container: the more Tiles in a Container, the smaller the image you can use.
| Tiles per Container | Recommended Image Size |
| One or two Tiles | 1280 x 320 px (large image) |
| Three or more Tiles | 320 x 160 px (small image) |
When a Tile background image is used, it may not display as expected in a mobile browser viewed in portrait mode. For this reason, keep Tile Icons visible and not transparent, since the icon is the primary identifier for a Tile on mobile.
Customization Tips
The following tips help keep Tile content legible and on brand.
- Choose colors with high contrast for good visibility.
- Choose background images that use a subtle pattern or abstract image.
- Apply opacity to background images so that Tile contents remain legible.
- Ensure the text color inside and outside a Tile is legible against the background.
