Default Profile Fields

Every Absorb LMS Portal includes a set of standard User profile fields before any Custom Fields are added. This article explains how many default fields exist, which fields they are, and how each field's default behavior determines whether it appears on the profile.

How Many Default Profile Fields Are There?

Every Portal begins with 16 default profile fields. Not all of them are shown right away. Five fields appear on the profile by default, while the remaining eleven are hidden until a System Admin chooses to display them. This means the field count a Learner or Admin sees can be lower than the total number of fields that exist on the account.

Defined Versus Visible

Please note that all 16 fields exist on every account, but only fields set to Required or Optional appear on the profile by default. Fields set to Hidden remain in the background until a System Admin displays them.

The Default Profile Fields

Each default field has a default behavior that controls how it appears on the profile. The behaviors are defined as follows:

  • Required: the field is visible and must be completed.
  • Optional: the field is visible but does not have to be completed.
  • Hidden: the field exists on the account but does not appear on the profile until a System Admin displays it.

The table below lists the default profile fields and each field's default behavior. Username, First Name, and Last Name are always Required and cannot be changed.

Last Name Required (cannot be changed)

For a fuller description of the standard User fields and where they appear in the Admin Experience, see the User Management article.

Default Fields Versus Custom Fields

Custom Fields are added on top of the default fields to collect information that the standard fields do not capture. The default fields listed above are always present, and any Custom Fields you create increase the total number of fields on the profile.

To learn how to create a Custom Field, see the How To: Add a Custom Field article. For the maximum number of Custom Fields your Portal supports, see How Many Custom Fields Can I Add To My Portal?

When creating a Custom Field, avoid reusing the name of a default field, such as First Name, because identically named fields can prevent reports from generating correctly. For more detail, see the Portal Settings Overview article.
