My Courses Page Views

The My Courses page is where Learners find and manage the Courses they are enrolled in. In the Modern Learner UI, Learners can display this page in a Grid, List, or Calendar view. This article explains what each view displays, how Learners switch between views, how System Admins set the default view, and how sorting and filtering work in each view. A short section at the end describes the views on the legacy My Courses page.

My Courses Views in the Modern Learner UI

The Modern Learner UI displays the My Courses page when a System Admin enables the modernized Learner Experience for the Portal. The Absorb Learning Mobile App always displays the modern page, regardless of the desktop setting. The following table describes the three available views:

View What It Displays
Grid Enrolled Courses as Course Cards in a multi-column grid that adjusts to the screen size.
List The same Courses, filters, and Course count as the Grid view, arranged in a single column.
Calendar A calendar of the Learner's Instructor Led Course (ILC) Sessions in place of the Course list, with its own filter panel.

Modern Learner UI Required

The views described in this section are available only when the Modern Learner UI is enabled. For details on enabling it, see the Modern Learner UI article.

Grid View

The Grid view displays each enrolled Course as a Course Card. Each card shows the Course status as a text label and an action button that reflects the Learner's next step, such as Start or Resume. For more detail on the card design, see the Modern Learner UI article.

The page loads 30 Courses at a time and displays a count of matching Courses. To display more, Learners click Load more at the bottom of the page.

When no Courses appear, the page displays a message that explains why. Separate messages appear when the Learner has no enrollments, when the applied filters return no results, and when a search returns no results.

List View

The List view displays the same Courses as the Grid view in a single column. Both views share the same filters, sort order, and Course count, so Learners can move between them without losing their place.

The List view is not available on screens narrower than 641 pixels, such as most phones. On these screens, only the Grid and Calendar views are offered.

Calendar View

The Calendar view replaces the Course list with a calendar of the Learner's ILC Sessions. When the ILC Calendar is turned on through the New ILC Experience settings, Learners can display the calendar in the following time ranges:

  • Daily
  • Weekly
  • Monthly
  • Schedule

The Calendar view has its own filter panel, separate from the filters used in the Grid and List views. Learners can filter Sessions by status and see upcoming deadlines, such as due dates and expiry dates. For the full list of filters, status badges, and calendar colors, see the New ILC Learner Calendar article.

Switching Between Views

Learners switch views using the View as controls in the My Courses page header. These controls contain an icon button for each view, labeled Grid view, List view, and Calendar view.

To change the view on the My Courses page:

  1. Open the My Courses page.
  2. Locate the View as controls in the page header.
  3. Click Grid view, List view, or Calendar view.

How the Selected View Is Saved

The modern My Courses page stores the selected view in the page address (URL), not in the browser. This affects how the view behaves in the following situations:

  • The view is kept when a Learner bookmarks the page, shares the link, or uses the browser's back and forward buttons.
  • The view returns to the default set by the System Admin when a Learner opens My Courses again from the navigation menu.
  • The view stays the same while a Course details window is open over the page.

How Filters Carry Between Views

The Grid and List views share one set of filters, while the Calendar view keeps its own. When a Learner switches between these views, each set of filters is set aside and then restored when the Learner returns to that view.

Differences by Screen Size

The views and filter layout adjust to the size of the screen. The following table summarizes these differences:

Screen Size Available Views Filter Layout
Desktops and Large Tablets Grid, List, and Calendar Filters appear in a side panel that stays open.
Smaller Tablets Grid, List, and Calendar Filters open in a pop-out drawer with separate Categories, Filters, and Sort panels.
Phones (Narrower Than 641 Pixels) Grid and Calendar Filters open in a pop-out drawer with separate Categories, Filters, and Sort panels.

Sorting and Filtering in Grid and List Views

The Grid and List views share the same sorting and filtering options. On desktop, the side panel contains a Course search box, a Sort control, and a count of active filters with an option to clear them.

Sort Options

The Sort control changes the order in which Courses appear. The starting sort order is determined by the Default Sort Order setting, and Learners can choose from the following options:

  • Recent activity
  • Alphabetical
  • Date enrolled (new to old)
  • Expiry date (first to last)
  • Mandatory
  • Due soon
  • Expires soon
  • Time to complete, available only when Time to Complete is enabled for the Portal

For details on how Time to Complete values are configured and sorted, see the Time to Complete article.

Filter Options

Filters narrow the Courses displayed in the Grid and List views. The following table lists each filter section and when it appears:

Filter Description
Categories Browses Courses by Category. On desktop, Categories appear in the filter panel. On smaller screens, they open in their own panel. This filter is hidden when Always Hide Categories is enabled.
Type Filters by Online course, Curriculum, or Instructor led course. Selecting Instructor led course adds date and venue filters.
Status Filters by Not started, In progress, or Completed.
Language Filters by the languages available for the Learner's Courses.
Tags Filters by the Tags applied to the Learner's Courses.
Subscriptions Filters by subscription. This section appears only when subscriptions are enabled for the Portal.

Finding Expiring Courses

The Status filter does not include an expired option. To find Courses that are close to expiring, Learners can sort by Expiry date (first to last) or Expires soon. Completed Courses remain on the page unless Hide Completed Courses is enabled.

Admin Settings for the My Courses Page

System Admins configure the My Courses page in the Courses tab of a Department Template. These settings are configured per Department, and each Department can inherit settings from its parent Department. For full details on this tab, see the Department Templates: Courses Tab article.

The following settings affect how the My Courses page views display:

Setting Section Effect
Always Hide Categories My Courses Displays Courses as a flat list rather than organized by Category.
Default View My Courses Sets the view Learners see when they open the page.
Default Sort Order My Courses Sets the starting sort order for the Grid and List views.
Hide Completed Courses My Courses and Catalog Hides Courses with a Complete status from the My Courses and Catalog pages.
Hide Courses Outside Curricula My Courses and Catalog Displays Courses that belong to a Curriculum only within that Curriculum, rather than also as individual Courses.
Expand Refine Search by Default My Courses and Catalog Determines whether the filter panel starts open when Learners open the page.

New Department Templates start with the Card default view, the Date Enrolled sort order, and the filter panel collapsed.

How Default View Options Map to Modern Views

The Default View setting uses the view names from the legacy My Courses page. The following table shows which modern view each option opens:

Default View Setting Modern View Displayed
Card Grid
Detail Grid. This option is removed when the modern My Courses page is enabled, and Departments set to Detail are switched to Card. A System Admin must save the template to apply this change.
List List
Calendar Calendar
No Setting Selected Grid

Calendar Default and Sort Order

When Calendar is selected as the Default View, the Default Sort Order drop-down is disabled and any saved sort order is cleared. The calendar controls its own ordering.

Views on the Legacy My Courses Page

Portals that have not enabled the Modern Learner UI display the legacy My Courses page. On this page, Learners choose from four views using the Choose View control:

View What It Displays
Card View Course cards.
Detail View Larger Course panels with additional details.
List View A compact list of Courses.
Calendar View A month calendar, with the selected date's Courses listed below it.

Unlike the modern page, the legacy page saves each Learner's selected view in their browser. The page first uses a view named in the page address, then the Learner's saved view, and then the Default View set by the System Admin.

A Sort By drop-down appears in every view except Calendar View, with the same sort options as the modern page. Learners click Show filters to open the filter panel. The Card View, Detail View, and List View offer a full set of filters, while the Calendar View offers only venue location and venue type filters.
